Pepcid

Pepcid is an effective drug used for the treatment of stomach and intestine ulcers. The drug is also prescribed against Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Belonging to a group of medicines known as histamine-2 blockers, Pepcid works by decreasing the acids produced in the stomach. The drug is only part of a complete treatment programme, which includes diet and lifestyle habits.

While you are on Pepcid medication, follow your doctor’s direction; never go for larger doses or less or take the drug for longer periods unless your doctor recommends it.

Pepcid comes in chewable tablet form and also in oral suspension. Take care that you complete the whole course of the medication. If you stop Pepcid in the middle of a course, your conditions may worsen. Generally it takes about 4 weeks for your ulcers to get healed. But in case your symptoms do not improve in six weeks, you have to contact your doctor.

While taking the medication, there is a possibility that you might forget a dose. If by any chance you forget to take a Pepcid dose, take it as soon as you remember it. But do not take the missed dose if it is time for your scheduled doses. Take care that you do not mix two doses of Pepcid at the same time.

In case you suspect of having taken more of the drug, it is better to seek your doctor’s help. Some of the Pepcid overdose symptoms include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, fast heart rate and stomach pain.

Pepcid has to be avoided if you have allergies to famotidine or any similar medications such as ranitidine, cimetidine and nizatidine (Axid). Well, you should also inform your doctor if you have allergies to any food or any substance. It is also good to inform your doctor if you have any medical conditions like kidney disease, liver disease, asthma, stomach cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and breathing problems. Your doctor may not prescribe pepcid if you have any of these conditions or he may go for a dosage adjustment.

The drug is FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not yet known if it causes harm to the foetus. But pregnant women and those who hope to get pregnant should have to take the drug only after consulting their doctor. As the drug is liable to pass into breast milk, breast feeding women should have to use pepcid only after discussing with the doctor about the risks involved in taking the drug.

While you are on pepcid medication, it is better to avoid Alcohol as mixing the two can cause serious stomach damage. The drug can also impair your thoughts and reactions. Therefore you have to be careful when driving or performing any hard task after taking pepcid.

Pepcid is also known to interact with certain medicines. So before your doctor prescribes the drug, tell him about all the medicines that you ou are using like atazanavir itraconazole, ketoconazole, aspirin and NSAIDs.

Like all medicines, Pepcid also comes with certain allergic reactions and also side effects.
